Every so often someone makes a passing comment that Android sounds a bit muffled or lacking in stock form. Rather than be left with an empty feeling, it’s generally patched up with an equalizer that increases loudness, making everything sound more obnoxious in the process. This may provide a somewhat louder soundtrack but it doesn’t really address the inherent shortcomings in Android’s audio processing and tuning. Everything changed with a flash of the Audio Wizard DTS:X Ultra port.
This is no ordinary EQ. I’m talking about the audio engine I was given a sneak peek of when I first reviewed the Asus Zenfone 6, that now happens to be available as a HFX module for our Rom. I’ve had the normal rom as my daily driver for a while now, and believe me – the improvement is MASSIVE especially while gaming such as FPS or watching movies in the dead of the night. Your phone actually ends up sounding more like a decent flagship rather than some 10 rupee crap made of tin can rubbish we’ve been force fed by most Indian manufacturers in this price range.
Why You’ll Love These Features
Magisk KSU Next APatch If you’ve got Magisk, KSU Next, or APatch installed, then you can literally install this update in less than 10 seconds. So here’s what you’re in for:
- Immersive 3D Surround Audio (3D Sound): On headphones, or even on phone speakers, this makes the sound feel enormous.
- Deep Bass and Clear Vocals Boosts low bass notes, while maintaining clear vocals.
- Optimized Audio Profiles Simply toggle between Music, Movie and Gaming mode instead of adjusting the sliders.
- Better soundstage, accuracy: I could actually pinpoint where various musical components were located.
- Low Latency Gaming: This is very important for competitive games. Footsteps are heard as they are made with no lag.
- Cleaner Vocals: Even at max volume, the distortion is way lower than stock.
- Better Than All Other Cleaners Out There – System-Wide Enhancement: This Cleaner works with ALL media players and apps like YouTube, Spotify, Netflix and more.
- Balanced Headphone Response: Equalizes the audio output so that you don’t tire of listening to music.
My Real-Life Experience
I installed this via Magisk Manager and immediately plugged in my bass heavy music playlist. The DTS:X Ultra toggle is actually more than a marketing ploy. It really does sound more immersive. In Call of Duty Mobile, the sound quality was reminiscent of a proper gaming headset, even though I was using my earbuds.
Makes perfect sense to me why the audio in the Zenfone 6 is so good, and that ASUS has spent a ton of money to get it that way. It seems that the audio port has been opened up, so now the audio from the Zenfone 6 can be “ported” to other handsets, giving us a cleaner, louder and more premium sounding audio experience. Get it while it’s hot!
