Let’s be honest, most smartphone speakers are pretty awful. We buy a new flagship or mid range phone, fire up our favourite tunes and expect to be wowed. Instead we get a flat, unimpressive experience. We’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time messing around with “audio mods” that just seem to make things louder and slightly more mushy.

I’d been living with the usual bore of a default earbud equaliser for a while, but then I decided to give the Dirac Audio Port from the Nothing Phone 1 a go. A week of using it on my main phone and I’m yet to look back. It’s not just a volume boost, it tidies up the entire mess of it all.

Why This Module Actually Slaps

Magisk, KSU Next, or APatch rooted? Hate all the EQ apps that claim to boost the output of your device? This is a full system level port of the audio enhancement code to really move more air with your hardware. Here is what you will get:

  • Speaker Optimization: this is what keeps my speakers from sounding like trash and adds some actual stereo depth. Crazy how much of a difference it makes.
  • Headphone Surround These cheap “3D sound” buttons on other headphones just give you reverb. This actually gives you a real virtual surround sound.
  • High Clarity Audio: You’ll be able to hear those crisp hi-hats and well-defined vocals without that unbearable trebly sharpness.
  • FET Compressor: Keeps the energy punchy. Serves to create a flat audio level, in order to avoid the loud sound distortions, and to avoid bringing the quiet sound to almost inaudible levels.
  • Spectrum Extension: Brings back the low and high end frequencies that are always lost to the bitcrusher “psycho” algorithm in other software packages.
  • Auditory System Protection: What Will Save Your Eardrums? This is essential to preventing fatigue caused by extended exercise or music exposure (for all those 3-hour gym sessions).
  • Differential Surround & Playback Control: All the surroundings you want in perfect balance with exact playback articulation.

My Honest Take

I flashed the ROM through Magisk Manager, which was about as painless as can be expected. So, one of the very first things I started messing around with was the Best Equalizer feature that comes with ROM. It appears to be some form of auto equalizer (not just a bunch of sliding EQ dials, unlike some other roms), and has a couple of presets that are surprisingly nice. Going from normal listening on a pair of $20 earbuds to my studio monitors and flipping the EQ to High Clarity makes a tremendous difference in my opinion.

It makes sense that Nothing Phone (1) had some of the best sound on a smartphone in a long time. Bringing that to future devices is an obvious play. Nothing Phones won’t become boomboxes but your Spotify playlists will finally sound decent.
