KTweak: The No-Nonsense Kernel Optimizer
It seems like we are overrun by kernel optimizers on the Android scene. Person Kernel Tweaker, Better Kernel Tweaker, Kernel Tweaker for Gaming – and even more. While it is true that some of these do tweak a little bit of the kernel, and often in a interesting way, most of them act as closed, featureless black boxes that don’t do much of what they claim to do. So they are usually no use to us at all.
KTweak.
KTweak is a no-nonsense, science-based kernel tweaking script, designed to yield real tangible improvements on Linux and Android systems. Instead of relying on placebo effects, we have designed this script to bring real tangible improvements, by reducing the scheduler latency and thus providing a smooth user interface for you and an enhanced gaming experience.
Unlike other “kernel optimizers,” KTweak is:
- Completely Transparent: 100% open-source with no compiled, closed-source components.
- Concise: Less than 200 lines of code.
- Evidence-Based: Fully backed by real-world benchmarks.
- Expertly Crafted: Designed by an experienced kernel developer.
- Safe to Use: Non-intrusive and completely systemless.
Real-World Benchmarks
(Tested on OnePlus 7 Pro, Android 10 with OEM kernel)
1. Scheduler Latency via schbench (Lower is better)
KTweak helps to tighten latency spikes which means that the system reacts to inputs more quickly.
- Stock (99.0th percentile): 45,120
- KTweak (99.0th percentile): 8,880 (Massive improvement)
2. Synthmark Latencymark (Lower is better)
- Stock: 10 / 12
- KTweak: 4 / 4
3. Scheduler Throughput via perf bench sched messaging (Lower is better)
- Stock: 0.331 seconds
- KTweak: 0.808 seconds
4. Scheduler Throughput via perf bench sched pipe (Lower is better)
- Stock: 16.159 seconds
- KTweak: 18.599 seconds
The Verdict
If you look at the benchmarks, KTweak actually loses a bit of background throughput, but it gains the other in greatly reduced latency. Exactly what you want in a phone. KTweak keeps the stock kernel very latency-focused, which is ideal for making sure your UI is as smooth as possible, and also as responsive as possible for gaming. 😀
